Job Summary

The Operating Room Nurse Manager is a registered nurse who provides leadership and coordination in the operating room (OR) environment. They are responsible for ensuring that the OR runs smoothly and efficiently, while maintaining patient safety and optimal outcomes. 

Duties and Responsibilities

• In collaboration with the Orthopedic Service Manager and Chief of Anesthesia, plan and manage the daily operations of the operating room, including scheduling surgeries, staffing, and ensuring that equipment and supplies are available.
• Oversee and monitor the outcomes of coordinated and comprehensive patient care delivery within the operative department.
• Collaborating with surgeon leaders and anesthesia, drive efficiency targets related to on-time starts, turnaround time and OR utilization.
• Responsible for leading and managing the OR staff with input from the Orthopedic Service Manager, including nurses, surgical technologists, and sterile processing technicians. This includes making decisions related to hiring, training, scheduling, and performance evaluations.
• In collaboration with clinical education, ensure that staff members are trained and qualified to perform their duties, and that they are following established policies and procedures.
• Champion ongoing education and training to the operating room team to ensure that everyone is up to date on the latest techniques, equipment, and best practices.
• Conduct routine staff meetings and huddles to engage staff and consistently share information.
• In collaboration with the orthopedic service manager, responsible for managing the equipment and supplies in the OR, including ensuring that they are in good working order.
• Develop and implement policies and procedures for the OR to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements (inclusive of CMS and AAAHC), patient safety standards, and evidenced based clinical practices.
• Ensure that the OR meets all regulatory requirements for safety, infection control, and environmental
  standards.

Requirements and Qualifications 

• Bachelor's degree in nursing or a related field preferred, and a current license to practice as a registered nurse (RN) in NYS.
• CNOR preferred or in progress to obtain within 24 months of hire.
• Minimum of 3 years of experience in perioperative nursing, including demonstrated leadership ability.
• Knowledge of orthopedic surgical procedures, instrumentation, and equipment.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work effectively across teams with a diverse group of healthcare providers.
• Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire staff to achieve organizational goals.
• Ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and work well under pressure.
• Ability to circulate in the operating room to provide reliefs as needed to team members.
• Proficiency in using electronic medical records and other technology.

Physical Demands

• Manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination to provide patient care and operate equipment
• Corrected vision and hearing within normal range to observe and communicate with patients, providers, and staff
• Position requires full range of body motion including ability to position and move patients
• Extensive standing and walking
• Frequent reaching, stooping, squatting, bending, kneeling, and crouching
• Occasional lifting and carrying carry items weighing 50 pounds or more
• Occasional exertion of 50 lbs. or more of force
• Work environment may involve some exposure to hazards/physical risk
• Occasionally remaining in a stationary position, often sitting for prolonged periods working on a computer, telephone, copy/fax machine, and other office equipment
