Lubbock Heart & Surgical Hospital specializes in the care of cardiac, orthopedic, nephrology, urology, and general medical patients.  We are also a highly active inpatient center mainly centered on surgical procedures that include cardiothoracic, orthopedic, urology, and general surgery.  We have a 24-hour Emergency Department with 5 fully equipped ED rooms, 4 fully operating OR rooms, 4 cardiac catherization labs with 1 electrophysiology room, 11-day surgery rooms, 58 acute care beds spread over three units, and 16 cardiac critical care rooms.  We pride ourselves on giving the best overall care possible to our patients and on our family style atmosphere that includes everyone: patients and their families, physicians, and our employees.

Job Summary

  • The Registered Nurse is responsible for the provision nursing care to patients; including assessment, direct physical care, evaluation, teaching, and counseling, while strictly adhering to the standards of Perioperative Nursing Clinical Practice. Follows AORN Standards, recommended practices, and guidelines. Responsible for promoting team work with physicians and personnel of other departments. Responsible for solving practical problems, dealing with a variety of issues and interpreting a variety of instructions furnished in written or oral form. Demonstrate clinical knowledge and judgment necessary for patient’s nursing care.

Minimum Education and Experience

Board Eligible Graduate nurse or Associate’s degree from an accredited two-year college or university, or diploma in nursing. BSN desired. At least two years of cardiac care experience. Must be certified on BLS/ACLS.

Your Essential Job Functions

  • Demonstrates the ability to transfer scientific knowledge from social, biological, and physical sciences in applying the nursing process.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and competency in performing baseline nursing skills. Maintains clinical competencies according to departmental standards.
  • Accurately assesses patients according to unit guidelines upon admission and continually assesses patients for information necessary to plan and administer care.
  • Must be an active advocate for the patient. Accurately identifies and determines priority of the patient’s need/problems, anticipating emergencies and complications of pathology, making provision for them and assisting others in implementing complex care.
  • Communicates effectively with patients, families and physicians. Must be able to provide instructions to patients related to the patient’s plan of care.
  • Maintain a safe work environment by regulatory requirements, reporting untoward incidents per hospital policy. Must provide a safe environment for patients, families, and co-workers.
  • Maintains a committed and cooperative attitude with staffing, promoting teamwork and harmony by readily assisting other staff and patients without being asked to do so.
  • Assumes, when necessary, the responsibilities of the Charge Nurse by preparing patient care assignments, establishing priorities and delegating responsibilities of the Charge Nurse by preparing patient care assignments, establishing priorities and delegating responsibilities, and communicating effectively with physicians and other members of the health care team.
  • Participates and performs other duties as assigned.

  • Demonstrates the basic knowledge and skills (cognitive, technical and interpersonal) necessary to identify age-specific patient needs, appropriate for this position.

  • Maintain current knowledge of medications and administer medications in accordance with Hospital policy and procedures.
  • Provides accurate, timely, and complete documentation in respect to the plan of care, assessment, and other patient care documentation i.e., patient charges for supplies and implants.
  • Respects patients’ rights and confidential information.
  • Adheres to Infection Control policies and procedures.
  • Incorporates continuous performance improvement recommendations into clinical practice.
  • Supports and practices in accordance with Hospital policy, procedures, and protocol.
  • Follow time and attendance policy.
  • Contribute and participate in cost containment activities.
  • Complete unit education competencies, and other required training/in-service programs.
  • Willing to work a flexible schedule in order to meet the needs of the unit.
  • Adheres to Department Dress Code.
  • Assumes responsibility for his/her professional development.
  • Participates in the orientation of new staff members.
  • Available for call as assigned by the Supervisor.
  • Communicates changes in patient status to the TPCN and or Charge Nurse.
  • The Perioperative Registered Nurse should maintain an active presence in performing the scrub role to insure appropriate delegation and supervision of scrub duties and maintain the integral link between scrub and circulating responsibilities
